Project Description Status
Auto Wrecking Yard
Bonney Lake
Remediated 4,100 Tons of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soil at a former automobile wrecking yard on 10 acres. A No Further Action determination was obtained by the Washington Department of Ecology in four months from completion of the cleanup. This site is now occupied by an Albertson’s grocery store and retail shopping center.
Vehicle Repair Shop
Puyallup
Designed and installed a new septic tank system and remediated 664 Tons of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soil at a former automobile repair shop in preparation of selling the property to a muffler repair shop. A No Further Action determination was obtained in less than six months for the area cleaned up.
Former Gasoline Service Station
Puyallup
This site was historically occupied by a gasoline service station and vehicle repair shop. A total of 2,415 Tons of petroleum impacted soil was excavated, sampled and profiled for off-Site disposal. 4,852 gallons of petroleum impacted groundwater was also profiled and pumped out of the open excavation for off-site disposal. This Site is undergoing further study to determine if natural attenuation can be implemented as a cleanup action alternative. The Site is currently occupied by an inhabited four story commercial-residential building.
Heavy Equipment Storage Yard

Olalla

This Site was a heavy equipment storage yard for a rock quarry firm. This cleanup action included excavating with a backhoe a total of 27.5 cubic yards (38.5 Tons) of Petroleum Contaminated Soil from a total of nine identified Areas of Concern on the Site. The contaminated soil was loaded into a dump truck and transported to an off-Site licensed treatment and disposal facility. The distribution of the PCS on the Site indicates that the releases of petroleum-related substances in soil on the ground surface at Areas 2 - 9 occurred as a result of spills and leaks of motor, hydraulic, brake, and lube oils from heavy earth moving equipment that was formerly stored and used on the Site.  Area 1 was impacted by a release of diesel fuel from a leaking valve affixed to the north end of a 19,000 gallon above ground storage tank (AST). Completed and awaiting for a clean up response letter from the local health department.
Christmas Tree Storage Yard

Shelton

This Site was used as a Christmas tree staging yard. The characteristics of contaminants identified in soil were motor fuels (diesel fuel) and other vehicle and heavy equipment fluids such as motor oil, lube oils, hydraulic oil, brake fluid, grease, and organic residues from chemically-treated railroad ties.  The petroleum hydrocarbon contamination of vehicle fluids occurred from past spills and/or leaks during refueling semi-trucks and other equipment with motor fuels and from repairing vehicles and Christmas tree handling equipment. A No Further Action letter was obtained by the client.
Mason County PUD

Shelton

This Site is occupied by a county office building. An area encompassing approximately 750 square feet was contaminated with heavy oil petroleum hydrocarbons. Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination, which was identified in surface and subsurface soil in the vicinity of a 2,500 gallon Underground Storage Tank, exceeded MTCA Method "A" cleanup action levels.  The contamination presumably occurred from past spills and/or leaks of Bunker C oil.

Approximately 182 Tons (130 cubic yards) of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soil was excavated and piled onto a temporary stockpile.  The contaminated soil was loaded and transported to an off-Site licensed facility for treatment.
A No Further Action letter was obtained by the client.
Pierce County Facility

Tacoma

This Site was formerly occupied by the County's police department fleet repair facility. An area encompassing approximately 32,000 square feet (0.73-acre) was assessed for petroleum hydrocarbons (mineral spirits, hydraulic oil, heavy oil, and gasoline) and heavy metals (cadmium and lead).  Petroleum hydrocarbon and heavy metal contamination was identified in subsurface soils beneath a former vehicle repair facility.  Subsurface soils reported petroleum hydrocarbon and heavy metal concentrations that exceeded MTCA Method "A" cleanup action levels.  The contamination occurred from past spills and leaks of cleaning and thinning solvent (mineral spirits), petroleum hydrocarbons (motor oil, hydraulic oil, and gasoline), and heavy metals (cadmium and lead) into the environment.  Approximately 3,601 Tons (2,401 cubic yards) of contaminated soil was excavated and immediately loaded and transported to an off-Site licensed facility for treatment.

A No Further Action with a restrictive covenant letter was obtained from the Washington Department of Ecology in 4 months from completion of the cleanup action. The Site is now occupied by the new Pierce County Jail.
Investment Firm

Federal Way

This Site was formerly occupied by a residence and a junk vehicle storage lot. The recognized environmental conditions included finding four abandoned 55-gallon drums of unknown substances and over 100 containers of chemicals and petroleum related compounds scattered on the parcel. The results of the soil quality assessment beneath drum number four reported concentrations of six carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds in soil which exceed the Method “A” cleanup action level. The cleanup action included excavating (hand shoveling) approximately 0.25 Ton (0.2 cubic yard) of PAH impacted soil from beneath drum number four. The soil cleanup action removed the PAH compounds to a concentration below the 2005 MTCA Method “A” cleanup action level. The work also included the characterization and off-Site treatment and disposal of the four abandoned 55-gallon drums and staging and off-Site disposal of other containerized wastes found on the Site. Completed. This Site is being developed into a health care center.
Machine Shop

Kent

This Site is occupied by a metal fabrication shop. The property was assessed for reported spills and leaks of chlorinated cleaning solvents and metal cutting fluids. Model Toxics Control Act Method "A" cleanup action levels for diesel, heavy oil, and trichloroethylene in soil and sediments were exceeded. This Site is currently being remediated for an old leaking storage tank before the machine shop occupied the site.
