Project Description Status
Paper Mill Research Facility
Mason County
Surface soil, sediments, and runoff water adjacent to former chemical storage areas, floor drains and manholes from a 9-acre segment of the Site were assessed for heavy metals, petroleum hydrocarbons, pH, Volatile Organic Compounds and Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons. A total of 130 media samples were collected. Arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, diesel, heavy oil, and toluene concentrations from several samples exceeded Model Toxics Control Act Method "A" clean-up action levels. The property was not purchased because of the identified recognized environmental conditions.
Automobile Repair Shop
Sumner
Assessed subsurface soil and groundwater quality from 4 installed monitoring wells at a former gasoline service station and auto repair shop. Soil samples exceeded Model Toxics Control Act Method "A" cleanup action levels for gasoline-range petroleum hydrocarbons and benzene. Groundwater samples exceeded cleanup action levels for diesel-range petroleum hydrocarbons and benzene. This site is currently vacant and awaiting further assessment and/or cleanup.
Plumbing Supply Company
Tacoma
The property is currently occupied by a wholesale plumbing supply warehouse. Identified recognized environmental conditions included a former woodworking factory with a paint department and storage room and reddish brown clinker fill material (foundry waste) was historically dumped as fill material near an active railroad line. A subsurface soil quality assessment identified arsenic, benzo(a)pyrene, carcinogenic Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, lead and cadmium above MTCA Method "A" cleanup action levels.
Machine Shop
Kent
This Site is occupied by a metal fabrication shop. The property was assessed for reported spills and leaks of chlorinated cleaning solvents and metal cutting fluids. Model Toxics Control Act Method "A" cleanup action levels for diesel, heavy oil, and trichloroethylene in soil and sediments were exceeded. The landowner is awaiting further study to determine the source of the contaminants.
Automobile Hulk Yard

Fife

This Site is occupied by a metal plater. A Phase I Environmental Site Assessment revealed that approximately 2,820 cubic yards of petroleum contaminated soil from previous remediation activities at a former automobile hulk dismantling and storage yard was temporarily stockpiled on the Site. Surface soil sampling performed beneath the former stockpile revealed two areas of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination, primarily due to heavy motor oils. The purpose of performing the assessment was to evaluate soil quality at selected locations on the Site for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) and heavy metals.

The petroleum contaminated soil was removed and a No Further Action letter was obtained by the client. The Site is now occupied by a metal plater.
Auto Repair Shop

Sumner

Several soil samples collected near the former tank farm and fuel pump island were submitted for analysis and exceeded Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA) Method "A" cleanup action levels (CALs) for gasoline-range petroleum hydrocarbons and benzene for unrestricted land use. Gasoline-range petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in groundwater in four installed monitoring wells.

Awaiting further action.
